Waltero's Technology & Core Approach
Waltero delivers a deployable Edge AI sensing platform. At the heart of it is the W-Sensor, equipped with a camera, embedded AI, and multiple connectivity options. It captures the physical world — meters, gauges, displays, equipment states — and instantly transforms it into actionable digital data on the device itself.
The data is sent to Mimir, Waltero's Cloud AI service, where data is refined and combined into insights that are consumed in crisp dashboards, or sent through APIs and other connectors to customers' BI/SCADA/ERP or other systems.
Instead of streaming raw images to the cloud, the W-Sensor processes them locally using lightweight AI models. The device interprets digits, pointers, or other signals and transmits only compact results, making it secure, power-efficient, and scalable.
It works over NB-IoT, LTE, and WiFi, with no external gateways required. Each unit is self-contained and directly transmits its results.
The same principle — camera + AI interpretation — applies to a wide range of physical states. For example:
Power lines: detect faults, snow/ice accumulation, or vegetation encroachment
Water levels: monitor reservoirs, tanks, or drainage systems
Blockages: identify debris in tunnels, pipes, or waterways
Leaks: detect visual signs of fluid leakage or flooding
This allows infrastructure owners to “see” and act on issues remotely without sending personnel on-site.
No. While camera + edge AI is the foundation, the W-Sensor also integrates other sensing modes to expand monitoring capabilities:
Infrared (IR) cameras: track heat patterns, e.g. solar panel performance or electrical hotspots
Vibration sensors: monitor pumps, turbines, or rotating machinery to detect imbalance, wear, or failure risks
Microphones / acoustic sensing: analyze sound signatures to assess the health of motors, compressors, or pipelines
This modularity allows Waltero to tailor monitoring solutions to the customer’s exact operational needs.
Because every unit is standalone and cloud-connected, scaling is essentially plug-and-play. Waltero’s platform has been designed for deployments from dozens to millions of sensors.
The W-Sensor
Universal digitization: reads virtually any situation (meter/gauge/physical state)
Extremely versatile: Waltero's tech is built with modularity at its core and can be easily adapted to a wide range of use cases. If it can be seen, Waltero can see and interpret
Edge AI efficiency: interprets data on-device, lowering cost, data and power use
Ultra-low power: can be deployed many years on battery power
Runs independent of other infrastructure: with in-built cellular communication and power source, the W-Sensor can be deployed in rough and remote spots, providing operational visibility in spots that would otherwise be impossible, or prohibitively expensive to monitor.
Modular sensing: combines camera, IR, vibration, and acoustic modes
Fast deployment: install in <5 minutes, no flow cuts/rewiring/other intervention for legacy infrastructure
Scalable & future-proof: OTA updates add new recognition models and features
Security-first: AES-256 encrypted, regional cloud storage, no personal data captured
In large scale roll-outs, e.g. for water meters, installation takes just a couple of minutes. The W-Sensor is put in place using a mount and activated with the push of a button. The installer pair the sensor to the Mimir Cloud using an app.
The combination of NB-IoT and LTE-M means that the W-Sensor is usually able to connect, even in situations where normal cellular connectivity is not available. For spots with very poor connectivity, the W-Sensor can be equipped with a Range Extender Addon, that connects to any standard external antenna.
The W-Sensor buffers readings and syncs automatically when back online. The amount of buffer is configurable.
Battery life depends on a number of factors, most importantly the frequency of reading/transmitting data and the quality of the local network.
For hourly sampling and daily transmission of data, batteries will typically last at least 5+ years.
For situations where high frequency reading/transmissions are required, external power sources (i.e. mains power or power banks) can be utilized.
Yes — the W-Sensor supports over-the-air (OTA) updates for both firmware and AI models.
This feature can also be toggled off, in cases where for security reasons OTA is not preferred.
Mimir Cloud Platform
The data is fetched through Waltero’s REST API. It can also be pushed to your system. Waltero supports most existing standards, e.g. DLMS and is able to tailor formatting to customer requirements.
Data is stored in the same region as it is collected, meeting local sovereignty requirements. Custom options (e.g. private cloud) are available.
Secure firmware, 256k strong encrypted communication, and tamper detection mechanisms help protect both the hardware and data integrity.
Reading meters/dials, screens etc
The W-Sensor’s camera captures the meter face, and its edge AI interprets the reading directly on-device. This works for:
- Numeric digit wheels on water, gas, and electricity meters
- Pointer dials such as pressure and flow gauges
- LED/LCD numeric displays
- Mixed digit-and-dial meters
Waltero avoids expensive replacements. Installation takes around a minute, requires no specialist tools, and instantly makes legacy infrastructure digital without disruption.
In many cases, modern utilities will have a majority of their meters already exchanged for smart, connected meters, but will still have a large portion of the grid where replacing the legacy meters has not been possible or sufficient. This is particularly common for larger diameter pipes/meters and in situations where the customer requires more frequent sampling than what is offered by the smart meter.

Monitoring remote assets
Yes. The same camera + AI setup can monitor physical states, including:
- Power lines (ice buildup, vegetation encroachment, faults)
- Water levels in tanks, rivers, or reservoirs
- Blockages or debris in tunnels, pipes, or drainage systems
- Visible signs of leaks or flooding
- Crop health, irrigation output
Beyond that, W-Sensors can be equipped with other telemetry options, offering a variety of sensing modes, as needed:
- Infrared cameras: detect heat signatures, e.g. solar panel efficiency or electrical hotspots.
- Vibration sensors: track pumps, turbines, or rotating machinery for wear or imbalance
- Acoustic sensors: listen to machinery to detect faults from sound patterns
This modularity allows Waltero to monitor nearly any physical process.

Commercial Questions
Waltero provides hardware, connectivity, and cloud services as a turnkey package. Pricing model can be set up geared towards CAPEX (investment) or OPEX (recurring costs) as preferred by the customer.
A Waltero project typically starts small and scales fast. After defining the scope, a field validation is performed where W-Sensors are deployed on a smaller number of monitoring points. This ensures local connectivity and a first sample of images/data from relevant sites.
Once validated, the project expands to a deployment phase, where sensors are rolled out across larger parts of the infrastructure. Waltero’s team or local partners assist with planning, connectivity setup, and integration into existing systems such as billing platforms, SCADA, or data lakes.
During operation, the W-Sensors run autonomously, processing data on-device and transmitting only results. The Mimir platform collects, stores, and visualizes the data, while APIs allow seamless integration into the customer’s existing workflows.
A full project therefore combines:
- Fast deployment with minimal disruption
- Reliable, up-to-date data from legacy assets
- Low operational overhead thanks to long battery life and OTA updates
-Scalability from dozens to tens of thousands of sensors
In practice, a Waltero project transforms previously hard-to-reach, analog, or manual processes into a continuous stream of trusted digital insights.
Waltero is headquartered in Lund, Sweden, with manufacturing spread across Sweden and Malaysia. Offices and partners support global deployments.
