W-Sensor firmware release 2.0: ready for the new, much better camera
Firmware release 2.0 brings the new, much better W-Sensor 2.0 camera into the standard firmware, spends less battery on Wi-Fi sites and reads light-activated LCD meters.

Mattias Nahlin
Chief Strategy OfficerFirmware release 2.0 makes the W-Sensor more efficient, more reliable and easier to use across a wider range of installations. The biggest change: W-Sensor 2.0 comes with a new, much better camera, and this release brings it into the standard firmware. The release also spends less battery on Wi-Fi sites and reads light-activated LCD meters.
Highlight: a much better camera in W-Sensor 2.0
W-Sensor 2.0 has a new, upgraded camera. It needs less light to take a clear picture, so meters in dim rooms, shafts and cabinets are easier to read. It also keeps images sharp over a wider range of distances, so a good reading depends less on mounting the sensor at exactly the right distance from the meter. Release 2.0 brings the new camera into the standard W-Sensor firmware, so new sensors run on the same firmware as the rest of your installations.
What's new
Change | What it means for you |
Longer battery life on Wi-Fi installations | The sensor uses less energy when it connects, which makes a real difference on networks that come and go. |
Light-activated LCD meters | The sensor can give a short light pulse before it reads, so LCD displays that only switch on with light are visible when the image is taken. |
Clearer startup feedback | When you switch a sensor on by hand, the LED lights up straight away to confirm it has started. |
Wider range of meters | Better support for different meter and display types reduces the need for installation-specific firmware adjustments. |
Together, these changes further reduce battery use, make installations more reliable and increase the number of meters the standard W-Sensor firmware can read.
Behavior and settings
Wi-Fi connection. We have optimized how the sensor uses energy when it connects, based on what we have learned in the field. This makes a real difference on networks that come and go.
LCD wake-up pulse. This is off by default. When it is switched on for a sensor, the sensor gives a light pulse of a set length before its normal reading. Talk to us or your partner contact if you have meters with light-activated displays.
Startup. When you switch a sensor on by hand, the LED lights up briefly so you know the sensor is running. Scheduled wake-ups do not give this signal.
Availability
Release 2.0 has been available since October 2026, and all new W-Sensors ship with it. For sensors already in the field, we update over the air where the release brings a clear benefit for that installation, so you do not need to visit your sites. If you think your installations would benefit, or have questions about the release, contact your Waltero partner contact or reply to our newsletter.
